Quick answer

To reduce image size, first make the picture smaller in pixels, then save it at a lower JPG quality. Use Resize Image to set the width (for example 1200 px), then Compress Image at 70–80% quality. That usually turns a phone photo of several megabytes into a few hundred kilobytes, and it all happens in your browser, so the photo is not uploaded.

Why your photos are so big in the first place

A modern phone camera takes photos of 12 megapixels or more. A 12 MP photo is about 4000 × 3000 pixels, which is far more detail than a screen, an email or a form needs. Saved as a JPG, a photo like that is often 2 to 5 MB. Screenshots saved as PNG can be just as heavy.

The file size depends on three things:

  • Pixel dimensions. The width and height of the picture. Halve both and you have a quarter of the pixels to store.
  • Compression quality. How much detail the format throws away to save space. A JPG at 70% quality is much lighter than the same JPG at 100%.
  • File format. JPG and WebP are built for photos. PNG is lossless, so a photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger.

Detail matters too. A photo of a busy street weighs more than a photo of a clear sky at the same size, because there is more to store. That is why two photos with the same settings can end up with different file sizes.

Pixels vs quality: the two ways to shrink an image

Almost every method in this guide pulls one of two levers. Knowing which one to use saves a lot of trial and error.

Resize (fewer pixels)Compress (lower quality)

The rule of thumb: resize first, then compress. Taking a photo from 4000 px wide down to 1200 px wide removes more than 90% of its pixels, and nobody can see the difference on a phone or laptop. Lowering the quality alone, from 100% to 10%, shrinks the file less and makes the photo look visibly worse.

How to reduce image size in your browser (any device)

This works the same on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and Chromebook, with nothing to install. The steps take about a minute.

  1. Open the resizer. Go to Resize Image and choose your photo. You can pick several at once.
  2. Set a smaller width. Type the width you need, for example 1600 px for email or 1200 px for most websites and forms. Leave Keep aspect ratio on so the photo is not stretched. Download the result.
  3. Compress it. Open Compress Image, add the resized photo and set the quality slider to 70–80%.
  4. Check the new size. The results show the size before and after. If it is still too big, lower the quality a little, or go back and resize to a smaller width.
  5. Download and send. The file is a normal JPG that works in email, WhatsApp and upload forms.
Compress ImageFree. No signup. No watermark. Photos stay on your device.
Compress an image now

Only need a lighter file at the same size, for example a photo that is already 1200 px wide? Skip step 2 and go straight to Compress Image.

How to get a photo under 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB or 1 MB

Many forms ask for an exact limit, such as "JPG under 100 KB". There is no single setting that hits every target, because each photo has a different amount of detail. These starting points get you close on the first try for a typical phone photo. Then adjust.

Target sizeTry this widthTry this qualityTypical use
Under 20 KB300–400 px60–70%Signatures, small ID photos
Under 50 KB500–700 px65–75%Exam and job forms, profile photos
Under 100 KB800–1000 px70–80%Application forms, portals
Under 200 KB1200 px75–80%Websites, CMS uploads, listings
Under 500 KB1600–2000 px75–85%Email, blog photos
Under 1 MB2000–2500 px80–85%Email, print-quality sharing

If you miss the target, change one thing at a time:

  • Still too big? Lower the quality by 5–10 points. If the photo starts to look blotchy before it fits, reduce the width instead.
  • Far under the limit? You have room to spare. Raise the quality or the width for a sharper photo. Some forms also set a minimum size, so do not go too low.
  • Form gives pixel sizes too? Set those exact numbers in Resize Image first, then use the quality slider to reach the KB limit.

KB and MB: 1 MB is 1,000 KB in most apps, though some systems count 1,024 KB. If a form says "max 1 MB", aim for about 950 KB to be safe.

How to reduce image size for email

Email services limit the total size of a message, and attachments count against that limit after they are encoded for sending. Encoding makes files about a third larger, so the real space for your photos is smaller than the number you see.

Email serviceStated limitSafe total for attachments
Gmail25 MB per messageAbout 18 MB
Yahoo Mail25 MB per messageAbout 18 MB
Outlook.com20 MB per messageAbout 14 MB
iCloud Mail20 MB per messageAbout 14 MB

Work email often has lower limits set by the company, and the person you send to may have a smaller inbox limit than you. To stay safe:

  • Resize photos to about 1600–2000 px on the longest side. They still look sharp full screen.
  • Aim for 300 KB to 1 MB per photo. Ten photos then fit easily in one email.
  • For dozens of full-size photos, share a cloud link (Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud) instead of attaching them.

Sending scanned pages? Put them in one file with JPG to PDF after you shrink them. One small PDF is easier for the reader than ten separate images. Already have several PDFs? See how to merge PDF files into one.

How to reduce image size for WhatsApp

WhatsApp already shrinks photos when you send them the normal way, so you usually do not need to do anything. In standard quality it reduces the size and resolution to save data. You can tap the HD option before sending for a sharper version, which is still compressed.

Shrinking a photo yourself helps in a few cases:

  • You send photos as a document. Sending through Document keeps the original file (up to 2 GB), so a 6 MB photo stays 6 MB. Resize it first if the other person is on mobile data.
  • You want control over quality. When you compress a photo yourself, you choose how much detail to keep. WhatsApp's automatic compression can soften text in photos of documents and receipts.
  • The photo is going to a form later. If someone needs your photo for an application, send them a version that already meets the form's KB limit.

For profile pictures, a square photo of about 640 × 640 px is plenty. Use Resize Image with the same number for width and height.

How to reduce image size for online forms and portals

Government sites, job portals, universities and visa applications often list strict rules for photos: a file type, a maximum (and sometimes minimum) size, and pixel dimensions. Read them carefully, because an upload that breaks any one rule is usually rejected without a clear reason.

A real example: the US Department of State's online passport renewal asks for a JPEG, PNG or HEIF photo between 54 KB and 10 MB, in a square shape from 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels. In India, government exam and recruitment forms commonly ask for a photo of around 20–50 KB and a signature of around 10–20 KB, though the exact numbers change from notice to notice.

  1. Write down all the rules. File type, KB or MB limits, pixel size and shape. Check the official notice, not a screenshot from a friend, because rules change between years.
  2. Get the right file type. If the form wants JPG and you have HEIC or PNG, convert first with HEIC to JPG or PNG to JPG.
  3. Crop if needed. Many forms want the face or signature to fill the frame. Crop in your phone's Photos or Gallery app before resizing.
  4. Resize to the stated pixels. Enter the width and height in Resize Image.
  5. Compress to the KB limit. Use Compress Image and the table above as a starting point.

Signatures shrink easily because they are mostly white paper. Scan or photograph the signature on plain white paper in good light, crop tightly around the ink, then resize. A tight crop saves more space than any quality setting.

Built-in ways on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

You can also shrink photos with apps that are already on your device. They are handy, but they give you less control over the final file size than the steps above.

Windows 11

Open the photo in the Photos app, open the … menu and choose Resize image. You can pick a preset size or enter your own width, height and quality. The classic Paint app also works: Resize on the Home tab, then Save as JPEG.

Mac

Open the photo in Preview. Go to Tools, then Adjust Size, and enter a smaller width. Then use File, Export, choose JPEG and move the Quality slider to the left. The export window shows the expected file size before you save.

iPhone and iPad

When you email several photos from the Photos app using the Mail app, iOS can offer a choice of Small, Medium, Large or Actual Size, with the total size shown for each. For anything else, such as a form upload, open Compress Image in Safari. It works on the iPhone itself, and you can save the result to Files or Photos. iPhone photos are often HEIC, which many forms reject, so convert them to JPG first.

Android

Android gallery apps differ by brand. Some, such as Samsung Gallery, include a resize option in the edit or more menu. If yours does not, the browser method works in Chrome on any Android phone, with no app to install.

Which image format gives the smallest file?

The format you save in can matter as much as the settings. Here is a short guide for everyday use, and our JPG vs PNG vs WebP comparison goes deeper with real size tests.

FormatSize for photosTransparencyAccepted by formsUse it for
JPGSmallNoAlmost alwaysPhotos for email, forms and sharing
WebPSmaller than JPGYesSometimesWebsites and online stores
PNGLargeYesUsuallyLogos, screenshots, graphics with sharp edges
HEICSmallNoRarelySaving storage on iPhone

The biggest easy win: a photo saved as PNG. Converting it with PNG to JPG often cuts the size by more than half with no visible change. For a website, Image to WebP usually makes an even smaller file, and it keeps transparency.

How to reduce image size without losing quality

Strictly speaking, any lossy compression removes some data. The goal is to remove data nobody will notice. These habits keep photos looking good:

  • Start from the original. Each time a JPG is saved again it loses a little more. Always shrink from the original, not from a copy that was already compressed or sent through a chat app.
  • Do not go below the size it will be shown at. A photo shown 1200 px wide on a website should be at least 1200 px wide. Smaller looks soft.
  • Stay at 70% quality or above for photos. Below that, skies, skin and gradients start to show blocky patches.
  • Never enlarge a small photo. Making an image bigger cannot add detail, and it makes the file heavier.
  • Keep the original. Save the full-size photo somewhere safe. You can always make another small copy, but you cannot get detail back.

Need a pixel-perfect copy with zero quality loss? Use a lossless format such as PNG and accept a larger file, or reduce only the pixel dimensions.

Troubleshooting

The file got bigger after compressing

This happens when the original was already heavily compressed, for example a photo saved from WhatsApp, and you save it again at a high quality like 90%. Lower the quality, or resize instead.

The photo looks blurry or blocky

The quality is too low or the width is too small for how the photo is shown. Go back to the original and use a larger width with 75–80% quality.

The form says the dimensions are wrong

Check whether the form wants an exact size, such as 600 × 600. In Resize Image, Keep aspect ratio fits the photo inside the numbers you type, so one side may be smaller. Crop the photo to the right shape first, or turn the option off if a little stretching is acceptable.

A transparent background turned white

JPG cannot store transparency, so Compress Image fills it with white. For logos and cut-outs, use Image to WebP instead, which keeps the transparent areas.

The photo is rotated after resizing

Some older apps ignore the rotation information that phones store in a photo. Rotate it in your Photos app, save, and resize again.

Is it safe to compress photos online?

Many online compressors upload your photo to their server, process it there and send it back. That is a real concern for ID photos, signatures and documents, which are exactly the files people shrink for forms.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce an image to 100 KB?

Resize the photo to about 800 to 1000 pixels wide, then save it as a JPG at 70 to 80% quality. With DockFlip, use Resize Image first and then Compress Image, and check the new size in the results. If it is still above 100 KB, lower the quality a little or reduce the width.

How can I reduce image size without losing quality?

Reduce the pixel dimensions to the size the image will actually be shown at, and keep JPG quality at 70% or higher. At normal viewing size the photo looks the same, while the file becomes much smaller. Always start from the original photo rather than a copy that was already compressed.

What is the difference between resizing and compressing an image?

Resizing changes the width and height in pixels, so there are fewer pixels to store. Compressing keeps the dimensions but stores less fine detail. Resizing usually saves far more space, so for large phone photos resize first and then compress.

How do I reduce photo size on iPhone?

Open DockFlip Compress Image in Safari, choose the photo and download the smaller JPG. When you email photos with the Mail app, iOS can also offer Small, Medium, Large or Actual Size. If the photo is HEIC and a form rejects it, convert it to JPG first.

How do I reduce image size on Android?

Some gallery apps, such as Samsung Gallery, have a resize option in the edit or more menu. On any Android phone you can open DockFlip Resize Image or Compress Image in Chrome, choose the photo and download the smaller file, with no app to install.

Why does WhatsApp reduce my photo quality?

WhatsApp compresses photos sent the normal way to save data and storage. Choose HD before sending for a sharper version, or send the photo as a document to keep the original file. Documents can be up to 2 GB, but they do not show a preview in the chat.

Is 1 MB 1000 KB or 1024 KB?

Most apps and websites treat 1 MB as 1,000 KB, but some systems use 1,024 KB. If a form says the maximum is 1 MB, keep your file a little under, around 950 KB, to be safe.

Are my photos uploaded when I use DockFlip?

No. Resize Image and Compress Image run inside your browser, so your photos are not sent to DockFlip. There is no signup and no watermark.
